Generalised Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety Panic Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Phobia Therapy in Farnham Surrey by Anna Kenyon

An individual suffering from generalised anxiety disorder is likely to feel highly anxious in response to a wide array of situations. Many people that attend The Psychology Clinic for treatment of GAD feel as though they are not able to cope with the demands placed upon them, reinforcing any beliefs they may have about being weak and more vulnerable than others, which in turn serves to maintain the anxiety. As anxiety is such an unpleasant state, we are driven to reduce feelings of anxiety in whatever way we can. This means that an individual suffering from anxiety may start avoiding situations that he or she believes will act as triggers. Although avoidance will lead to a reduction in the anxiety in the first instance, over time the avoidance will lead to heighten the anxiety.

As part of the treatment for GAD, an individual will be encouraged to face situations that he or she has been avoiding, using specific techniques to help manage the anxiety. Over time, the anxiety will reduce, which in turn will build the individual’s confidence in their ability to cope.
